Wal-Mart To The Rescue

If you live in a high crime, high unemployment neighborhood, and are fed up with unions, bad economic policies, and misguided politicians chasing the few remaining jobs in your neighborhood out, you may have some good news coming your way if Wal-Mart has its way:

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s largest retailer, said Tuesday it plans to build more than 50 stores in struggling communities over the next two years, as part of a goal to create between 15,000 and 25,000 jobs.

Wal-Mart said it will build the stores in neighborhoods with high crime or unemployment rates, on sites that are environmentally contaminated, or in vacant buildings or malls in need of revitalization.

The Bentonville, Ark., company said it expects many of the jobs will be in minority communities and could generate more than $100 million in state and local tax revenue. It already has over 1.3 million U.S. employees.

Wal-Mart already has plans to open between 335 and 370 new U.S. stores this year after 341 last year and has said it sees room for more than 1,500 additional stores in the United States in the coming years, on top of nearly 3,200 it already operates.

This is not new for Wal-Mart, Wal-Mart has been bringing jobs to high unemployment minority neighborhoods for a while now, this is just the first time I have heard it being a corporate policy. But don’t hold your breath on this, you can bet that the unions and misguided politicians will not be far behind and soon kill, or atleast greatly handicap, this goose as well, after all, eliminating jobs is the one thing that unions and misguided politicians are good at.

  • In a neighborhood where the mom-and-pops have all been driven out by the criminals, (after their revenues had already been declining due to poor local economy) this has GOT to be good news.

But you are right, this is not the time to hold your breath.

  • Finally poverty will end in the inner cities, the Ghettos the Barrios of America—Shoot if we had more Wal Marts in Mexico, it would stop illegals coming to America!!! More Walmarts in Mex!!

How about Wal Mart as a social policy to combat not only unemployment, but crime and poverty as well? Well maybe with Walmart coming to these places, and the crime rate going down, then the mom and pop shops will come back to those communities right?

Or now parents will not have to work two jobs, because they will have one job at Walmart that will pay them sufficiently with a nice healthcare plan—so that they can spend more time with their children being responsible parents. And now they wont have any excuse for missing their PTA meetings…

  • LOL. Nobody said it was the silver bullet, but it certainly helps and it’s certainly more than many other companies can say.

  • I will gladly lift this and place it on my blog (with due credit).

Now I put in a system for a top 3 retailer in the US…the #1 issue affecting the bottom line – theft. It’s great WM is going into areas that need help. But it better be ready to be a redoubt of steel, cameras, police if it wants to stay in buisness.

Great Post – never saw this any place else.
