“This is a bit off the topic, but I cannot let pass the claim that vouchers would drain the good students from public schools, and would leave the students who remain there much worse off. The true situation illustrates how competition works. Schools that lose students to better schools would be under great pressure from parents and others to improve themselves. They would tend to get new principals, change their teaching, etc. This is not just theory, for it is backed up in the studies by Carolyn Hoxby of Harvard and others”. –Gary Becker, Nobel Prize Winning economist, in a side response to a commenter over at the Becker-Posner Blog

It’s so cute how you point out every single person who went to Harvard like they’re your hero. One of these days I’m going to buy you a ticket to Cambridge so you can live the dream.
Oh, certainly not every single person who went to Harvard…you won’t find me quoting Harvard sociologists, or Harvard Chicano Studies professors, for example.
But in case the subtlety is missed, it is not Harvard people that are my ‘heros’, it is economists in general that are my heros. Whether they studied economics at Harvard like Hoxby, at the University of Chicago like Becker, or never studied economics at any University at all like David Friedman, it is economics (the study of the efficient allocation of scarce resources) in general that I admire.
All other social sciences are too soft in the ’science’ area for me to put too much trust in.
But don’t let this stop you from buying me those Cambridge tickets.
Pobrecito, it’s “heroes”, not “heros”.
I blame it on my ESL classes growing up…English only baby!!!
That’s right, blame it on the teachers. Take NO responsibility.
Maybe, if you were in a good ELD (English Language Development) class or better yet in a Spanish Dual Language Immersion class, you wouldn’t be singing that tune now.
English only - BAH! I bet that you think Ron Unz rocks!
Pobrecito…
I had a feeling this comment would get your attention.
